Meditation isn't really about getting rid of thoughts, it's about changing the pattern of grasping on to things, which in our everyday experience is our thoughts.

The foundation of everything that we do in Shambhala is meditation. This ancient practice of self-discovery, originating from before the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, is rooted in the simple but revolutionary premise that every human being has the ability to cultivate the mind's inherent stability, clarity and strength.

It is the Shambhala view that we all have the same good heart and mind as the Buddha, with the same potential to be more awake and compassionate in everyday life. A powerful and potent method of connecting with that basic goodness, in ourselves and in others, is through the practice of meditation.

By meditation here we mean something very basic and simple that is not tied to any one culture. We are talking about a very basic act: sitting on the ground, assuming a good posture, and developing a sense of our spot, our place on this earth.

Instruction

The Shambhala Meditation Group has a number of trained and authorized meditation instructors who offer instruction at no cost. Individual and group instruction is available every Tuesday evening and at other times convenient to your schedule, by appointment. For more information or to schedule instruction, please email us or call (415) 457-4157. Once you have received initial instruction, regular meetings with an instructor are encouraged. There is no charge for follow-up instruction.

Practice

Meditation practice is held every Tuesday evening at Shambhala Open House. Practice includes sitting meditation, a brief period of walking meditation and discussion. On the fourth Sunday of each month, Shambhala Morning Practice is offered in a retreat atmosphere. See our Open House & Sitting Schedule for more information.
